Hill, Joe
(1879-1915) Хилл, Джо
Профсоюзный деятель, автор и исполнитель песен. Был моряком, в 1910 вступил в профсоюзное объединение Индустриальные рабочие мира (ИРМ) [Industrial Workers of the World], был организатором нескольких забастовок. В 1913 стали печататься его песни. В 1914 был арестован в Солт-Лейк-Сити, шт. Юта, и по недоказанному обвинению в убийстве осужден на смертную казнь. Несмотря на попытки шведского правительства, президента АФТ [AFL] С. Гомперса [Gompers, Samuel] и даже президента В. Вильсона [Wilson, (Thomas) Woodrow] добиться пересмотра приговора, 19 ноября 1915 был расстрелян. Среди наиболее известных его песен: "Проповедник и раб" ["The Preacher and the Slave"], где была фраза ["pie in the sky"] (= "журавль в небе"), вошедшая как фразеологизм в английский язык; "Кейси Джоунз - штрейкбрехер" ["Casey Jones - Union Scab"] и др.
